Support Earthquake-Hit Myanmar and Thailand
Mar 31, 2025
Several strong aftershocks have occurred in the places affected by the initial earthquake, and a number of smaller aftershocks continue to be felt in Myanmar. The death toll has risen to 2,065, with 3,950 people injured and 270 people reported missing in Myanmar. In Thailand, 19 people have been confirmed dead, with 78 people remaining missing.
Assessments of the damage to The Salvation Army’s facilities continue. Initial reports indicate significant damage to Yeni corps quarters. The Salvation Army’s children’s home in Phyu has also reported damage. Thankfully, all officers, staff and residents are safe and accounted for in both locations.
Roads, and transportation infrastructure have been damaged in a number of regions in Myanmar. Millions of people face hours of power outages, and in some places telephone lines are still down after the earthquake. The airports in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw received heavy damage and will likely remain closed for months. Key highways and bridges connecting the city remain blocked. The logistics of getting relief teams and items to the affected areas are likely to be challenging.
An initial rapid response project is starting in Myanmar, which includes food, water, and shelter items. A larger project is being planned. The Salvation Army has a long-standing presence in Myanmar, having served there since 1915. Officers and corps members are ready for initial and future responses.
