Powering Hope: How Solar Energy is Transforming Communities in Guatemala
In the highlands of Guatemala, where families often struggle to make ends meet, schools and community centers face a harsh reality: rising energy costs and limited resources threaten their ability to provide education and safe spaces for children. For many, the choice is stark: Pay the electric bill or invest in better classrooms. Without intervention, these schools risk falling behind, leaving seats empty and futures uncertain.
The Challenge
Electricity is expensive, and in rural areas, power outages are common. Schools like Maya and Tierra Nueva were spending a significant portion of their limited budgets on energy, leaving little for teacher salaries, learning materials, or extracurricular programs. At Tecpán Camp, a vital hub for youth retreats and community events, the cost of utilities was eating into funds that could have supported expansion and maintenance.
The Solution: Solar Power
Through SAWSO's Developing Financial Independence (DIF) initiative, solar panel projects were introduced in schools and at Tecpán Camp. These installations do more than keep the lights on. They also slash energy costs, freeing up funds for critical needs like teacher pay and classroom improvements.
Captain Cristina Cedillo, who along with her husband leads the Chimaltenango Corps and school, shares:
"We are working with 172 kids in Pre-school and elementary school. In the school, we were part of a project in which solar panels were installed. Prior to the solar panels, we paid a bill of 1,900 Quetzales - the highest. Now we are paying 150–300 Quetzales, which is a significant reduction, helping us a lot with covering operations costs and a bit of remodeling within the school, which are noticeable - they're visible."
How It Generates Opportunity
Solar energy also expands opportunity. Lower operating costs mean schools can offer new programs, like music bands and after-school activities, attracting more students and increasing enrollment fees. At Tecpán Camp, savings from solar power help fund upgrades that make the camp more appealing for events, boosting rental income. These changes turn sustainability into a revenue engine, ensuring that every dollar saved is a dollar reinvested in education and community growth.
Captain Cedillo adds:
"With the funds we've saved with our reduced light bill, we've accomplished changing the playhouse for the kids. In addition, we've successfully paved a part of the field that, in the future, we hope to turn into a beautiful field for the kids."
The Impact
In classrooms once at risk of closing and community spaces that faced uncertain futures, hope now shines bright - quite literally. Solar panels have transformed schools and camps across Guatemala, turning financial strain into opportunity. Teachers enjoy greater stability, students thrive in enriched programs, and families see a future filled with promise.
Parents proudly watch their children march in school bands, and Tecpán Camp is fully booked for retreats and celebrations. What began as a sustainability effort has become a movement of empowerment, proving that even in the most vulnerable areas, innovation can light the way to lasting change.
