One Month After Nepal's Floods, The Salvation Army Continues Supporting Families
One month after devastating floods swept through communities in northern Nepal, The Salvation Army has provided emergency food, clothing and essential household supplies to 170 affected families as they begin the long process of recovery.
The floods, triggered by a sudden surge in the Bhotekoshi River on 26 August, left widespread destruction across multiple districts, washing away homes, businesses, roads and bridges and leaving thousands of people displaced. In response, The Salvation Army Nepal Region quickly mobilized to support survivors with basic essentials and emergency relief.
Working in close coordination with local and national authorities, Salvation Army teams traveled to some of the hardest-hit areas, including Syabrubesi in Rasuwa District, where entire communities were devastated by the floodwaters. Reaching affected families required navigating damaged roads and challenging terrain, but relief teams successfully delivered urgently needed supplies to those most impacted.
A total of 170 families received food and household relief packages containing rice, lentils, cooking oil, noodles and fiber quilts. The assistance helped meet immediate needs for families who had lost homes, possessions and sources of income in the disaster.
Recognizing the particular challenges facing children, The Salvation Army also provided 160 sets of clothing, including T-shirts and trousers, for distribution to boys and girls whose belongings had been destroyed by the flooding.
As teams distributed aid and assessed ongoing needs, they encountered stories of profound loss. In communities such as Betrawati, survivors described returning to find homes, businesses and farmland buried beneath mud and debris. Many families lost loved ones, while others have been forced to relocate as they wait for opportunities to rebuild their lives.
The Salvation Army also provided basic essentials beyond relief distributions. During assessment visits, staff assisted vulnerable survivors, including helping a mother and her infant travel to Kathmandu to access medical treatment.
While emergency relief has provided vital support, recovery efforts are only beginning. Communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors continue to face significant challenges, including the loss of housing, livelihoods and access to essential services. Many families now require temporary shelter, household items and educational support for children whose schooling has been disrupted.
The Salvation Army Nepal Region is planning a second phase of assistance and continuing assessments in partnership with local authorities and community stakeholders. Future support is expected to include winterization assistance and longer-term recovery initiatives to help families rebuild safe and stable lives.
